Two topics high on the interest list these days are innovation and analytics. The C-level says it wants innovation. Sometimes it actually commits resources to it. Analytics is the new buzz word thanks to a half-dozen and growing number of books on it. Seems to me there is a natural connection between the two. Obviously, innovation requires extraordinary thinking. Some call it out of the box, and they are correct. The issue is what is the box? This is where analytics comes in.

I just returned from a trip to Medellin, Colombia. I spoke at a conference and met with faculty and students at a university. I found two distinctly different groups. On one hand many of the attendees wanted to learn the basics of measurement; i.e., what is the formula for cost per hire. On the other there were well developed descriptions of complex human capita/financial research and models.

Does engagement correlate with business outcomes? According to a couple of recent studies by Gallup and McBassi & Company the answer is only, “sort of”.
