I just returned from a trip to Medellin, Colombia.  I spoke at a conference and met with faculty and students at a university.  I found two distinctly different groups.  On one hand many of the attendees wanted to learn the basics of measurement; i.e., what is the formula for cost per hire.  On the other there were well developed descriptions of complex human capita/financial research and models.

So what is the point?  When you ask what is the state of the art in any HR issue you have to recognize that there is a spread from not aware to highly sophisticated.  While probably 60 percent or more of HR departments practice little to no measurement at the other end there are companies like Luxottica, Hewlett Packard, Lowes and Target to mention a few that are doing some very advanced work.

The question is, where are you on the continuum?  Are you among the leaders or the also ran and what does that imply for your organization?
