Does engagement correlate with business outcomes?  According to a couple of recent studies by Gallup and McBassi & Company the answer is only, “sort of”.

It seems the drivers of employee engagement are not universal.  They vary by company, even within the same industry, and only some engagement variables correlate with business results.  The message is, if you focus on getting higher engagement scores on your employee survey you may be missing the critical issue.  It is like polishing a car that is running on only 5 cylinders.

The suggested solution is to build a “smarter” employee survey, statistically link the measures of human capital management to business results and use that to develop a fact-based human capital management strategy.  If you want suggestions on how to do that let me know.
