Many years ago I headed HR in a company of a few hundred employees. It was a small bank with about a dozen branches. We had 4 people in HR/Payroll: one recruiter, a payroll/general clerk, the typical mother hen who looked out for and took care of employee problems and me. This was in the 1970s before computers came to HR.

It is now apparent that this recession is going to be not only long but also may take another dip. Banks aren’t lending because their balance sheets are still a mess. So, companies can’t borrow for growth and are not likely to until better economic signs stabilize. Consumers aren’t spending because of job loss and general insecurity. Other than that things are great!

Leadership can be like a circus; a four ring circus. I see the essence of leadership as four interlocking rings of activity. The rings are Knowledge, Development, Management and Measurement. They are all in action concurrently just like a circus. Consider these rings and how they are connected, or disconnected, in your organization.

Two topics high on the interest list these days are innovation and analytics. The C-level says it wants innovation. Sometimes it actually commits resources to it. Analytics is the new buzz word thanks to a half-dozen and growing number of books on it. Seems to me there is a natural connection between the two. Obviously, innovation requires extraordinary thinking. Some call it out of the box, and they are correct. The issue is what is the box? This is where analytics comes in.
